The ARRL, founded in 1914 by Hiram Percy Maxim, practically invented organised amateur radio — the QSL bureau, the relay network, the very idea of a national society. With hundreds of thousands of licensees the USA is the biggest amateur population in the West, and a transatlantic QSO with a K or W station on 5 watts is the classic QRP trophy I am openly hunting.
